In The Terminal (2004), Viktor Navorski, an Eastern European tourist, finds himself in a difficult situation when a coup occurs in his home country while he is on a flight to New York City. As a result of the coup, all passports from his country become invalid, leaving Viktor in a state of limbo. Unable to legally enter the United States or return home, he is forced to take up residence in the airport's international transit lounge.
Living in the airport, Viktor befriends the staff and becomes a beloved figure among the airport community. He adapts to his new life by creating a makeshift home, learning English, and even finding employment.
