Fjärilen i glaskupan (2007) follows the story of Jean-Dominique Bauby, a 43-year-old editor for Elle magazine. After waking up in a hospital, he realizes that he has been in a coma for several weeks following a massive stroke. Despite his cognitive abilities being intact, he learns that he has locked-in syndrome, leaving him almost completely paralyzed and unable to speak.
Jean-Do's only remaining means of communication is his left eye, which he uses to communicate with the outside world. With his physical limitations, his hospitalization becomes a gathering point for the various people in his life, including his former lover.
As he navigates his new reality, Jean-Do reflects on his past relationships and memories through a series of flashbacks. The film captures his internal struggle as he grapples with the loss of his independence and his longing for connection.
