Pursy, a young woman portrayed by Scarlett Johansson, receives news of her estranged mother's passing in New Orleans. In A Love Song for Bobby Long (2004), Pursy decides to return to her mother's house, only to find it occupied by two men. One of them is Bobby Long, portrayed by John Travolta, a former professor and now an aging alcoholic.
As Pursy unveils her plans to sell the house and settle her mother's affairs, she discovers that Bobby and his protege, Lawson Pines (Gabriel Macht), have been living there illegally. Reluctantly, Pursy agrees to let them stay temporarily until she can sort out the estate.
